Introducing Simon: The Chief Brain

Before I show you how I make the healthiest breakfast on the planet, let me tell you a bit about me…

My story began at Saatchi & Saatchi

My name is Simon Lamey and I am The Chief Brain at The Brain Wheel :o). My story starts in February 2005 at Saatchi & Saatchi advertising agency (a long time before the words 'Brain Wheel' had entered my head). Being one of the most famous ad agencies, it was a fine place to cut one's teeth, managing clients' advertising accounts, and helping to deliver the ads they wanted.

I started out advertising cement

Yep, it's possible to advertise cement. And then I moved onto Irish shopping centres. And then back to more cement. But as I worked my way onto 'bigger’ clients, it wasn’t as glamorous as I thought. The mix of over-inflated egos, excessive business jargon, and all-the-hours-working quickly wore thin.

From Saatchi & Saatchi to focus groups

It was a deep curiosity for human psychology which took me into qualitative market research in 2007.

When I was a market researcher, I ran over 150 hours of focus groups and one-to-one interviews.  I’ve even followed people around with video cameras, watching what they did in their everyday lives, observing closely.

The whole experience taught me to listen and watch people a lot, and to speak less.

Businesses like Virgin Trains, The British Government, Lloyds Banking Group, RBS, HSBC, BBC, Lucozade, The Green Alliance have all paid me to understand their customers.

In 2011, life got strategic

Increasingly, I advised clients by creating strategies that attract customers via social media, websites, apps, email, content marketing, events, and retail. It got me hooked on developing simple strategies that help businesses with their marketing in a digital world.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with brands such as Honda, Suzuki, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin' Donuts, Police Fashion, TaylorMade Golf, Sage, Oracle, and Vodafone. And I gained lessons from working with these bigger brands that I can bring to small businesses today.

I preferred smaller businesses

After a few years, I found that these big clients weren’t as down-to-earth or as fun as the smaller clients that I worked with. So I decided to set up The Brain Wheel to help small and startup businesses market themselves using the best bits of big brand thinking.

Working with smaller businesses allows me to get to know the business owner well and understand what they really need.

Today I am a 'Marketing Hybrid'

I use my hybrid background of advertising, research and strategy to advise businesses on their marketing strategies, through consultancy, training courses, presentations, how-to guides and information products. Sometimes I do this from a client’s office, at home via Skype, Google Hangouts, or WebEx.

I strive to be a jack of all trades and master of many (a Tim Ferriss quote) from video editing, to writing strategy presentations, to measuring ROI. But most of all, I aim to give businesses a clear single strategic direction and help them out of the murky waters of short-term, tactical marketing.

To date, I have advised over 170 small and large brands.

P.S. Hello from me, my wife Sarah and daughter Lydia

Outside of work, I make the healthiest breakfast known to man (I think)

I swear that I make the healthiest breakfast in the world for me and my family.
I like to think of it like a starter, main and dessert.

Starter is a pint of water when you wake up, then one protein whey isolate shake + one pint of water, one teaspoon of local organic honey (or agave syrup) and one tablespoon of olive oil.

Mains is a bowl of oats (5 tbsp), organic chia seeds (4 tbsp), all-natural peanut butter (1 tbsp), a splash of organic milk (or almond or whatever you prefer) + hot water, a sprinkle of cinnamon and turmeric, mixed with berries, raisins, and half a banana and flaxseed (1 tbsp).

Dessert is simply a green tea.

If you can beat this breakfast for healthiness and taste, please send it to me. If you try out my recipe, let me know what you think!

If you've read this far, thanks for reading and I hope that you have got to know the real me a little bit better.
